It's Bachelor Weekend!
Talkeetna kicks off WinterFest tonight, starting with the Motorized Parade of Lights, the Taste of Talkeetna, and all sorts of other stuff. Peter Mulvey is playing a concert out at Whole Wheat Radio starting at 8pm (you can listen online!). The Su-Valley Hockey team has two home games this weekend!
Saturday is packed with events!!
It starts with the Oly and Lena ski race - which is a hoot!! Teams of an "Oly" and a "Lena" (or at least dressed the part) have to tell an "Oly and Lena" joke then relay around the 5k groomed trail. Good joke tellers get extra points!
The Talkeetna Bachelors Society will greet the passengers arriving on the Northbound train at noon, hoping for single ladies. Those single ladies are invited to participate in the Wilderness Woman Competition, with great prizes for the top 5 finishers - which will be awarded at the world-famous Bachelor Auction & Ball! That begins at 7pm, with the crowd-pleasing band Rick Shaw and the Transporters jamming funky dance tunes from 11 pm until it's time to go eat Breakfast at the Roadhouse! The Roadhouse opens at Midnight on this special night for those hungry revelers. Of course, there will be another band at the Fairview into the wee hours and the merriment will be all over town, with too many activities to list here.
The Bachelor Auction & Ball raises money for charity! If you can't make it, you can learn more & donate to the cause on their website.

Dreams of Climbing
Happy December!
Are visions of carabiners dancing in your head? Climbers everywhere are working out their winter plans for climbs, training and anything they can do to get out there. Expedition members all over the world are working on getting ready for that marathon on Denali. Wherever you are, keep up the good work!
We've had lots of inquiries about courses & expeditions this coming season...we have lots to offer. There is still lots of space on our Wilderness First Responder Course and WFR Recertification workshops. Check your card to see if your certification expires in 2009 - it's just around the corner!
For anyone looking to get out in the mountains and see what the Alaska Range has to offer, we have something for everyone! From a 12-day Mountaineering Course that starts with the basics, to an Advanced Mountaineering Course, to more advanced mini-expeditions like climbing Mt. Hunter, we have an exciting schedule with some space still available on the early season climbs.
If you are curious about enrollment levels, just drop us a line at info@climbalaska.org and we'll give you the latest.
If you try to contact us in Talkeetna and we don't answer right away, we are probably outside shoveling snow! We have loads of powder! If you're coming up to Talkeetna for WinterFest activitites (like the Bachelor Auction & Ball on Dec. 6) bring your skis! The local trails are being regularly groomed for skate and classic cross country skiing.
This weekend I was driving along the Turnagain Arm, south of Anchorage and saw a couple of guys ice climbing - Josh, was that your red truck? NASTY weather!! Hard core!

Expedition Update
The temp is soaring today! Up to 36 (above zero!) today, with warm and cloudy being the forecast for the week. Maybe we'll get some snow? The Aurora Forecast predicts a "moderate" showing of Northern Lights for Thanksgiving, which is more of a showing than we've had in quite a while. If you look at the forecast here, you'll see that the folks up around the arctic circle get more shows than we do "way down" here at Latitude 62.

Salute to Veterans, Schedule Update
We are sending out a salute to Veterans - we thank you for your service.
Hats off on this Veterans' & Remembrance Day.
There will be an observance of Veterans Day at the VFW Post #3836 here in Talkeetna on Thursday November 11th at 11am. A potluck of soup, sandwiches, salads and desserts will follow. All are invited to attend to honor our veterans. For information you may contact Nancy Trump at 733-1574.

Winter is here!
We have 6-8 inches of snow on the ground and more is falling daily. The "r" word has been in the forecast, we're lucky that it's all turned to snow so far. The dogs are loving it and it brings out the child in the rest of us! Time to wax the skis!Here is the current availability for 2011:

It's SPRING!!!
Talkeetna is blanketed in many feet of snow, the ski trails are groomed! The Oosik Classic Ski Race was held here on Saturday, 25k and 50k races were held under sunny skies and temps around 20-30 degrees F. Today the temp has soared up to 40 degrees F! More snow is in the forecast.
Yes, that big volcano to the south has been rumbling and sending ash up several miles, causing airport delays in Anchorage, and brief flight delays here in Talkeetna taken as precaution to prevent engine damage. Here in climbing-central the effects have been almost non-exisitent. THERE IS NO MEASUREABLE ASH IN TALKEETNA as of today. A trace amount, less than a "flurry". You can't see it unless you really look closely at the surface of the snow. If you want to follow the local news here is a good link: http://ktna.org/2009/03/24/mt-redoubt-erupts-again/
As far as we know, climbing conditions in the Alaska Range have NOT been affected by the ashfall. We will keep you posted here or by email if there are any additional preparations you should make.
A group at the Mountain House got to stay up there a few extra days, first because a little weather moved in, then because the flights were grounded due to the ash advisories; they were totally jazzed to be stuck! They made it out today, expecting (hoping) to be there longer. They said the weather couldn't have been better and they saw Northern Lights a couple of times.
Speaking of Northern Lights - Brian McCullough took a group of three to the Ruth Glacier for a Glacier Trek around the same days. They saw red aurora borealis one night! They came out of the mountains a day early, anticipating a storm. It was 20 below zero for a night with great conditions for touring during the day. They came back with huge smiles! I have some photos of that group that I hope to post soon!
We have been very busy here in Talkeetna, in spite of the sleepiness of this poor little blog. We had another Glacier Trek earlier in March, we've had a Wilderness First Responder Course and a WFR Recertification/Challenge Course and another is about to get underway. We do not expect the ashfall to interrupt the course, but be prepared just in case. March Madness
Sunny & beautiful by day, cold at night! It must be spring... and race season!
~The Iditarod winner crossed the finish line in Nome this morning, setting a new record.
~Saturday, March 19th is the Oosik Classic Ski Race! Last year 250 people descended upon Talkeetna to ski the 50k and 25k runs then celebrate like crazy. This year is predicted to be no different. The groomers have been working hard on that trail all winter.
~The next round of WFRs will be here on the 19th! There are still a few spaces left on that session - call the AMS office to register.

WFR Recerts Nearly Full!
It was cold in Talkeetna this morning, more normal temps for this time of year.
It is 10 above at 6pm and was 10 below overnight. Maybe the trails will firm up for the Oosik Ski Race after all!
Our first programs of the year have already begun! The Wilderness First Responder Course is full steam ahead. They were learning how to improvise rescue litters today.
Meanwhile, Super Guide Joey McBrayer is packing up for a Custom Mountaineering Course on Saturday at the Matanuska Glacier. Rumor has it there is fresh snow to play on!

AMS Climber on Peak 11,300' Ruth Glacier Alaska Range, AMS custom climb.
Julia is away for a few weeks so our dear old friend and the past AMS Admissions manager, Frannie and I are steering the ship at the AMS HQ.
The sun keeps shinning here in Talkeetna and the temperature is creeping up, it was 35 F today. Spring is coming slowly but surely.
The skiing is excellent and the groomers are working hard on the nordic ski trails on the frozen lakes, rivers, and through the birch and spruce forest. Mark your calendar for Saturday, March 20th and come on up to Talkeetna's 25 & 50 K Oosik Nordic Classical Ski Race, super fun for all!
The AMS office is accepting applications and confirming custom climbs for this spring, there will be lots of fun in the Alaska Range this year.
Feel free to contact us if you want to sign up or get a quote for a custom climb.

Moonlight Skiing
It is a Wolf Moon, how do locals celebrate? Some stay up late and howl, Denali Nordic Ski club is celebrating by skiing 25K tonight. They are practicing for the Oosik Ski Race, which is scheduled for March 20, here in (near) Talkeetna, it's 25 & 50K.
We're howling about enrollments here, the Wilderness First Responder 70-hour Course is nearly full! If you have been procrastinating, get that registration form to us ASAP! We usually have a waiting list, and occasionally some last-minute cancellations.
There is still some room on the WFR Challenge/Recertification sessions, but this is no reason to procrastinate; send in your registration form today! They usually fill quickly, in a burst of speed. We'll keep the waiting list going for you who do decide to put it off. Do you need to be certified for work? Your employer may even help you pay for it.
It's not too late to sign up for March or April Programs:

We're howling about enrollments here, the Wilderness First Responder 70-hour Course is nearly full! If you have been procrastinating, get that registration form to us ASAP! We usually have a waiting list, and occasionally some last-minute cancellations.
There is still some room on the WFR Challenge/Recertification sessions, but this is no reason to procrastinate; send in your registration form today! They usually fill quickly, in a burst of speed. We'll keep the waiting list going for you who do decide to put it off. Do you need to be certified for work? Your employer may even help you pay for it.

Spring Break Special
Oh, what a beautiful day!
It's 3 degrees & sunny!
We have a NEW PROGRAM for you beginners to consider ~ we're calling it our Spring Break Special. It's an 8 day Mountaineering Course, held on the Matanuska Glacier, for just $2000 per person, including food, fuel, group gear and transportation from Talkeetna. The dates are March 13-20, 2010. We have room for 2 more people. Contact our office for details. You could either meet us at the Glacier or meet us in Talkeetna. Otherwise, it will be very similar to our 6-day Mountaineering Course, with more time for practicing skills.

Mid January
After a sunny weekend, we got a great dump of snow this morning! We're getting a beautiful sunset, but the Alaska Range is still obscured by clouds. It seems warm for us at this time of year, with 20 degrees as the constant temperature.
The Italian soloist made it up to Base Camp on Saturday, rumor has it he's thinking twice about his plan to dig snow caves for the whole expedition and is wishing he brought a tent. Never underestimate this mountain! (or overestimate yourself)
